Matthew Shick
Senior Director, Government Relations

Mr. Shick joined the AAMC in 2005 and is responsible for legislative and regulatory policy and advocacy related to diversity, health equity, immigration, the physician workforce, higher education, and veteran affairs — among other areas.  In this capacity, he works closely with medical school and teaching hospital administration, students, residents, faculty, and the association’s Government Relations Representatives professional membership group.

Mr. Shick is the government relations liaison for the AAMC Center for Health Justice and the Executive Director of the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC), which advocates for workforce development and pipeline programs under the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  He served on the executive committee of the Friends of VA Medical Care and Health Research (FOVA) for more than 15 years and previously founded of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Stakeholders coalition, which saw funding for the NHSC more than double.

Prior to joining the AAMC, he worked for U.S. Representative Nick Lampson (TX), focusing on health and education issues. He began his career in higher education policy, advocating for the “David Shick Honesty in Campus Justice Act” to improve access of victims to the outcomes of university disciplinary proceedings. Mr. Shick holds a B.S. in Biology from Georgetown University and a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law.
